The Games Worth Opening First

Dream Pet Link — free online animal game

A catalogue this size needs a starting point, so here are six games that do something the others do not — with the reason, rather than a ranking.

Dream Pet Link is the one most people come here for, and it earns it. Nine timed boards of connect-style tile matching, and every board is solvable at the start. It becomes unsolvable when you clear the middle first and strand what was behind it, which makes it a planning game wearing a matching game’s clothes.

Hamstercycle has the cleanest single rule on the site: touch the floor and the attempt ends. Everything else follows from that. Furniture becomes a route rather than scenery, and momentum between jumps matters more than the jumps themselves.

Pet Healer: Vet Hospital is the only veterinary game here with a genuine economy. What you can treat is limited by the equipment you have bought, so the interesting decision is which purchase to make next — and the queue tells you, if you notice what you keep turning away.

Idle Mole Empire builds downward, and the lift between floors is the constraint the whole design turns on. Upgrading it improves everything already built, which is a more elegant progression than most idle games manage.

100 Hidden Capybaras hides large, placid animals in plain sight rather than shrinking them to a few pixels. That keeps it fair while still being difficult, and there is no clock anywhere in it.

Growing Fish is the only game here that is better with other people. Up to three share the lake, and dividing the water between you turns a simple protection game into a coordination problem.

None of these is the best game on the site in any absolute sense. They are the six that do something specific well enough to be worth the first half hour.
