You play the rescuer, and the game keeps that framing all the way through. The kitten arrives stray and dirty; the first job is the fur, the second is the wounds, and only when both are done does the animal count as healthy.
Ordering the stages that way gives the set a shape. Each tool has a moment where it is the right one, so the sequence teaches itself without a tutorial and without a clock pushing you through it.
The wardrobe at the end is short but generous, with enough accessories that two players finish with visibly different animals.
